Homeward bound<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Exiting the New River near low is rather exciting. The whole estuary funnels through a narrow channel and can reach high speeds with rapids. Daybreak gives us another hour before dead low, so we've got about a foot of drop through the channel, and with the engine at idle we hit seven knots without even trying. Crazy.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
As usual the wind died, so we motored in to Boston Harbor. Online we have met Richard, who owns a MacGregor 25 and has plans for cruising to the north. Most Mac owners just do weekends, so we're excited to meet another cruiser. We meet on George's Island at the old fort. His daughter is playing with a horn group, and with some costumes they march through the stone walls with trombones, tubas, saxophones and more. Much fun. Afterward, we row him out to Eclipse for a tour. He's planning to sail his boat, Kymopoleia, up the Maine coast to Nova Scotia and to a little French-owned island nearby, Miquelon. As fellow cruisers on a small boat we offered some pointers.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Anchored off Peddock's island with a sunset walk along the shores and houses. We're off again at dawn, taking advantage of the falling tide to exit Boston Harbor. Once the morning doldrums are over, we enjoy good sailing past Gloucester and into Rockport. Serendipitously, my daughter is visiting in the area, and we rendezvous with her and her boyfriend along the quiet evening streets of this very touristy town.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
As usual the wind died, but this time we were socked in with fog for three hours. Being a Tuesday and far from any busy harbor, we only encountered one other boat. But we did see a minke whale.<br />
<br />
Around the NH line, the wind finally strengthened so we could turn off the motor. Quiet. Then as we’re approaching Portsmouth harbor there’s a minke very close. And he stayed with us for about twenty minutes, surfacing and blowing and diving. So exciting! We could smell him sometimes and see his markings underwater.<br />
<br />
In the harbor we meet with Mark for dinner, then settle into Chauncey Creek for the night.<br />

We've learned how to effectively trim the boat so she sails herself mostly. We tie the tiller to one side with an adjustable knot, and a bungee cord to the other, and she just keeps going. With variations in the wind she'll head a little upwind or down, so we often make little adjustments, or to dodge a lobster buoy. It makes for easy sailing.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
From Cuttyhunk east, through Woods Hole and across to Martha's Vineyard. While looking for a place to anchor for the night, a motorboat came up to us and offered an un-used mooring ball. Yay! So we stayed two nights, spending a day riding the island busses around while occasionally stepping off to ride bicycles to points of interest.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
We folded the bikes to board the ferry to Chappaquiddick which saved $4, as they were now 'luggage' instead of 'bicycles'. Lunch at a pricy cafe (everything on the island is marked up). At Gay Head we joined the throngs to look out at the tall clay cliffs and lighthouse. Then down to the bicycle ferry at Chilmark, then back on the bus to Tisbury and our floating home in Tashmoo lake.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
From here we mis-read the tide charts and bucked a very strong current through the cut at Woods Hole to get into the quiet waters of Buzzards Bay. At times the engine was at max with our speed at only half a knot.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
But we got the right tide for the Cape Cod Canal, and flushed through early saturday morning at up to 7.3 knots. Cape Cod Bay offered us great sailing with a nice quartering tailwind. Thunderheads were building and winds more erratic so we ducked into New River Inlet, south of Scituate for the night. </div>

Crazy winds and big choppy waves keep us in Narraganset bay two days. But even though the forecast for Tuesday was for more of the same, the waves were big (3-4) but with long periods, making for easy sailing except that the wind, while predicted at 15 kts was only 5. We motor-sailed almost all the way to Cuttyhunk, only sailing the last two hours. Gusts to 20 or 25 predicted for the afternoon, so we stayed put and walked the beach. Gusts never materialized, and winds dropped to 10-12. So much for accurate forecasts.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Cuttyhunk is such a nice island with a relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed walking the town and looking out from the high point at 200ft. </div>

From New London where we dropped off our friends, we sailed to Stonington Harbor, and dropped the anchor. As dusk fell, a band struck up at a nearby marina. Intrigued, we rowed over and came ashore. We didn't talk with anyone, but it looked like a fancy affair with well-dressed people and some in costumes. We danced on the grass at the fringes and enjoyed the festivities, then when the band took a break, rowed back home.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Before sunrise we're off, out of Stonington and headed east. The wind is very light, so we're motor-sailing until late morning when the wind builds. As we turn in to Narraganset Bay where the waters are rough and choppy, the wind increases more until we're running under a double reefed main and no jib. But at least the waves subside. We drop anchor in the same cove near Wickford where we've been before</div>

Tuesday our friend Ira joins us for a few days of sailing around Peconic and out towards Montauk. We don't get that far but have a great time paddling and exploring a beach and lots of sailing.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
We drop her off, and two other friends join us after a kerfuffle with the bus. Two more days of very lazy sailing and beaches and swimming and just drifting when the wind dies.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
For their last day, we make the crossing back to Connecticut, vying with the frequent ferries. It's the first time we've had four people on board overnight. One must be patient, and it gets tight at times, but we all worked together for several fun days in the sun.<br />

Great sailing in Peconic and Little Peconic bays. They're each about 6 miles across but the last half mile along most shores is shallow. Sandy bluffs and pebbly beaches are festooned with huge mansions overlooking the water. The towns are picturesque with little tourist shops and basic amenities. Marinas are expensive, so we mostly choose to anchor away from the crowds. But it's wicked hot. And humid. And sticky.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Saturday evening is a free concert hosted by the Perlman Music Program. Performers are students of the program, college age, and very good. We happened upon the 'contemporary' performance night. Each group of four or five chooses a piece written by a living composer to perform. Each group was usually two violins, viola, cello, and either a base or double base. They had two weeks to pull it together, and they all nailed it!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Monday we return to Greenport and tie up by a restaurant for dinner, then stay the night. Storms come through in the evening with torrential downpours and lots of lightning. But this front signals the break of sticky-hot weather we've been suffering through.<br />

We've been fairly focused on making miles each day (with some diversions) and now that we're in the protected waters of Long Island, we relax, sleep in, and start late. A nice wind carries us out into Little Peconic Bay, but a thunderhead is building quickly and headed our way. Sometimes these can bring violent winds, so we find a nearby cove and drop the sails. But the storm fizzles so we head out. Just as we're settling into sailing in much stronger wind, the dead t-storm is resurrected and bigger! Back into the cove. The storm misses us, but radar shows more headed our way so we stay put all afternoon.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Plenty to do while at anchor. Fix a broken batten, plan modifications for next season, and read. More t-storms likely tomorrow.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It's a long run from Port Judith to Fishers with no places to stop along the way in case of bad weather. Nothing but a very long empty beach. But we have good weather today, although the wind is against us. So with an early start, it's a day of tacking and sailing close-hauled, which can be slow going. Eclipse doesn't point very well, and making some improvements on sails and rig are on our list of projects.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
As the wind eases and we still have miles to go, and we opt for motoring. Our reward is a glorious sunset on every point of the compass as we enter West Harbor.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Tuesday we cross the Sound to Orion Point. At first we have a light wind from the north and make a little progress. That gets replaced by the mid morning doldrums and motoring again.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Just as we round Orient Point the wind returns. Now we can lazily sail west toward Peconic Bay. But first we stop in the busy but picturesque town of Greenport, once home of a repair shop the served both the coast guard and the rum runners. We visit the IGA for groceries, watch the antique carousel, and poke around town. It's getting very hot and tomorrow will be hotter.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
From the free town dock in Greenport we continue west and drop anchor on the shore of the open bay.<br />

From our quiet anchorage outside of the busy inner harbor we row ashore and cycle to the local grocery. Today is Art Fair here in Wickford and traffic and parking are tight, so glad we're on bicycles, not cars.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Roger and Collette join us around 1pm for a fun sail out into the bay, around the lighthouse and back, followed by dinner on the Bar B in our cove. Fun to spend a day with old friends.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
After dropping them off at the dock, and motoring back to the cove we hear live music! By the time we take a mooring and row ashore, it's quitting time for the band, and everyone is heading home. Bad timing. We row back to our floating home. </div>
Garyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963725011218281503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2571381857036683633.post-57828075167634128392019-07-13T21:04:00.001-04:002019-07-13T21:04:30.004-04:00Day 16, July 13, Wickford RI<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Just west of the museum is Prudence Island and Potters Cove, a popular destination for pleasure boats of all types. We sailed in and borrowed a mooring, then rowed around the cove in the dinghy and took a walk on the gravel beach. Upon returning to Eclipse, we were informed that we were on someone else's mooring and they wanted it. No problem, we anchored nearby for a bit, but as the wind was building nicely, we set sail again.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Destination Wickford, totally upwind, and a strong wind it was. With two reefs in the main and one in the jib, progress was slow. Other sailboats with real keels just sailed by us. But we weren't in a hurry, and arrived in Wickford about 5pm. Dinner was fish chowder as the sun set. </div>
Garyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12963725011218281503noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2571381857036683633.post-78820098179809077262019-07-13T06:30:00.002-04:002019-07-13T06:50:34.170-04:00Day 15, July 12, Hereshoff<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Heavy rains in the night. Moisture management is a big concern on a small boat like ours, and rain seeps in. Which means we're doing laundry, which was needed soon anyway.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
It's a short sail today, across Mount Hope Bay, under a bridge, around the point and docking at the Hereshoff Marine Museum, where the great classic racing sailboats of bygone days were conceived of and built. Fifteen bucks allows you to tie up to their dock, but that gets you into the museum as well. Good deal.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The young man who comes out to help tie us up is planning to become a boat designer, and he's impressed with Eclipse as a relatively small live-aboard sailboat, able to make long journeys. We invite him to join us for dinner, but he's working late into the evening. Instead we share dessert.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
We enjoy the museum with its history of winning races and breakthrough designs. And of course lots of varnished and gleaming wood and brass in their collection of classic boats that came from this factory.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The local Dermatologists have booked an evening event here, and since they have a live band (duo) playing danceable music, we have to crash the party and dance.<br />

Heavy rains in the night. Moisture management is a big concern on a small boat like ours, and rain seeps in. Which means we're doing laundry, which was needed soon anyway.<br />

Dense fog in the morning. We dropped our borrowed mooring, moved closer to the beach, and anchored. Just then the Harbor Master started his rounds and told us we couldn't anchor there. But since we're just on the hook for a short time to use the bathrooms, he let us stay. Timing was perfect, as had he found us on his mooring just ten minutes earlier, he might've chewed us out for that too, or charged us for overnight rental.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Good winds blew us right up the Sakonet River to the city of Fall River. We rarely get to run (sailing with the wind directly behind) so this was a change of pace. But the pace was too much as the wind kept building. First one reef, then we dropped the jib, then a second reef was needed to sail comfortably without being overpowered.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
With storms in the forecast and no place to anchor anyway, we paid $75 for a dock at Borden Light Marina. These occasional dockage fees are generally our biggest expense on trips like this. On the plus side, it gives us access to wifi, laundry, showers, and the city. So we unfolded our bicycles and went exploring. The Marine Maritime Museum was very interesting with displays of interest to Fall River history, although I found two errors; and we visited an Indian grocery store.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Then off to dinner. Fall River (indeed much of this area) has a sizable Portuguese population, with excellent restaurants. T A Restaurant was our choice and was every bit as good as we expected. </div>

Weather just like the previous days; light morning winds, dead calm, then great sailing all afternoon. Getting a late start meant we had cleared Cuttyhunk by barely half an hour before the doldrums hit. But for entertainment we watched a pod of harbor seals on Penikese island.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Eventually we got some good wind and sailed briskly with a reefed main all afternoon and into the cove behind Third Beach near Newport, RI. And we have live music on the beach! As it turns out, it's a church revival band, and while the first hour was all instrumental, as the sun was turning rosy, voices were added singing Alleluia! Gloria! Praises! Probably 150 people gathered.<br />

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><div style="margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: start;">
This is becoming a pattern. We get up and there's a nice breeze so we set sail. About 9:30 it dies. Then around noon it builds until we have to reef the main. But today we were smarter! When the wind died we dropped anchor in a deserted cove with sandy beach on a private island. Naushon island, along with Uncatena and most of the islands in the Elizabeth Islands Chain are all owned by the Forbes family (of Forbes magazine). Big signs at every beach declare it as private. I can't imagine why anyone would want to take a piece of land away from everybody else. Ah well.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: start;">
The wind picked up again and we were off! Easy sailing as the wind increased until whitecaps just started to form. Time to reef. Yesterday I had installed a pulley (cheek block) and cleat on the boom as part of an improved reefing system, and it worked great! Not only that, but it held the sail to a better shape than before.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: start;">
We arrived in Cuttyhunk Harbor around 5pm and found an empty spot to drop anchor. The harbor is quite full, but since Eclipse draws about 18” with centerboard up, we can anchor where others can't. In Partial Eclipse (our dinghy) we rowed to shore with our folding bicycles, and perused the island. Like so many islands along the Atlantic seaboard, this one had lookouts during WWI and WWII. We cycled the twisty roads to the old lookout, gazed out over the sea, then cycled through town and in and out and around the island. There are natural ponds, small forests, lots of rabbits, flowering trees and shrubs and annuals, and nice but simple houses, not ostentatious.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: start;">
<br /></div>

Well, not too bad.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
There was a little wind as we departed Onset, but it died. All of Buzzards Bay was glassy and smooth except for motorboat wakes. We drifted as best we could, but gave up for a motor. Around 2pm a little breeze came up, gradually a little stronger, and soon we were sailing properly.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Our destination was a little island near Woods Hole, MA called Uncatena. Sparsely populated with bays and beaches a-plenty, and a road around the perimeter. We thought “We'll anchor, and ride our folding bicycles around the road!” Alas twas not to be. Locals directed us to a vacant mooring (nice!) from where we rowed to shore and set up our bikes. We asked some men working on boats about the docking and etc, where we found out that the entire island, including the roads, was all privately owned and we were not welcome. Alas! But a nearby island is open. So we packed up the bicycles and explored the trails of unpopulated Bull Island. Very nice with beach trees, sassafras, and of course, poison ivy.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

Yesterday's west wind shifted to the north during the thunderstorm, then to the east by morning at 20mph. Too strong to get out of this narrow and twisty harbor. So we do laundry instead. Around noon the wind abates, plus the inflowing tidal current has slacked, so we're off again although a late start.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Nice sailing off of Plymouth harbor for a few hours, but we've got to be at the entrance to the Cape Cod Canal before 7pm or the tidal current will be against us and we'd have to wait till morning. So we motor-sail. Not our favorite thing to do, but required in this case.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Along the way I bake potatoes in our solar oven for potato salad.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The canal is wide and fast at 2-4 knots plus our own speed. Fishermen and cyclists populate the shore. There's a little wind here and we try to sail, but it's barely enough to maintain steerage-way. Just beyond the end of the canal we find a nice spot to anchor near Onset Mass. As dusk falls we are treated to yet another fireworks show.<br />

Quite a wild ride today. We started early before the tidal current gets quite as strong as it was yesterday, and indeed at every low tide flow. But 'twas still very fast and we hit 7 knots. Some of the marker buoys were nearly pulled under by the flow.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
But once out on the open sea, the current was negligible. But the wind made up for it! We started with a reefed mainsail, within an hour reefed the jib too, and soon put a second reef in the main. Reefing reduces the total area of the sail, and is prudent in these conditions. As such we were making 4-5 knots and had our hands full.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Plymouth Harbor has a long and sinuous channel, with extensive and shifting sand bars to pay attention to. Nonetheless, we managed to sail upwind all the way to the edge of the mooring field near town. There's thunderstorms predicted, so despite the high price, we paid for a mooring ball, and the services of the yacht club launch to shuttle us to and from.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
After a quick lunch, we called for the launch to bring us to shore with our folding bicycles. Surprisingly, the dock jocks were unfamiliar with our choice of ground transport. Off we went, through town, stopping at the visitors center, then the Plymouth Historical Museum.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
We get such a mix of myth, fact and cultural embellishment through the media, school, and society, that it's often very good to find the real story in the place where it happened. What really set this group of settlers apart, was how they treated each other and other peoples. On board the Mayflower were passengers who were not Puritans. Before they settled, they all agreed (the Mayflower Compact) to help and support one another regardless and to vote democratically. Then when the first Wampanoag came to visit, they treated him with respect, likewise all the other natives they met.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
But eventually the original leaders passed away (both native and immigrant) and their descendants were less than civil to each other, which began 'King Phillips War', resulting in the demise of the native peoples, and ascendency of the Puritans throughout what is now Massachusetts. King Phillips was the leader of the Wampanoag.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Onward by bicycle to the Jenny Grist Mill; a reconstructed, water powered, stone mill for corn. Here we chatted with the docents and head miller. Our questions and interest were beyond what most tourists pose, and they told us stories and factoids of their own. At one point the head miller went off to fetch a book for me about different kinds of milling stones, grains and other products, and types of mills. Indeed I had seen some of them at work in Mexico and India, but not for tourists-for real work!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
After ice cream and back on board, the thunderstorms arrived. Our 30mph winds from the west became 40mph from the north with intermittent rain. Very glad we're on a mooring ball. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
The morning after. We woke up with the sun as Boston continued asleep after a festive Fourth of July fireworks display. Most of the boats in the river had made their way out but we remained, anchored in the middle of the Charles River. Our intent was to get out of Boston as quickly as possible and to make as many miles south as we could on this warm and sunny day. <br />
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
That was not to be the case however as we found out, when we arrived at the railroad drawbridge just prior to the locks, that they would be closed until 11:15 am. The announcement came over channel 13 that this had been posted in advance on some ubiquitous website somewhere in the world of the internet and that we should not be surprised. For all we knew, it could have been posted on Pluto and that would have been just as convenient a place. Of course if it had been filed and we had found it, we would have likely also noticed a long-standing note regarding the building of an intergalactic bypass through our solar system and right through our planet.<br />
<br />
Of course, no one had noted either memo regarding the closure on the bridge or the intergalactic bypass to be built through our solar system, so there were about a dozen boats all tied up waiting to get through along with us.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br />
It was about at this time that it also became apparent that the float for the anchor was never retrieved. Of course when anything could possibly get tangled up its most likely place to do so is around our centerboard. It is the most inaccessible place on our boat and so of course it stands to reason that whatever flotsam may exist will exhibit itself upon the centerboard. Sure enough, my intuition was right and when I tried to lower the centerboard it would not drop fully; and of course now when I try to raise it it would not raise fully. Yes, the $1 pool noodle from Dollar tree had found its way wrapped around the center board.<br />
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Well not all luck was unfavorable and for something unfavorable, something favorable seemed to happen on this day. Had it not been for a coast guard boat heading up river and a fire boat heading down river which needed to get through, we would have had to have waited until 11:15 a.m. for the first opening. Of course these boats have priority over any rules or legislations that may have been enacted prior and so they were allowed to go through. Well of course the bridge master took pity on all the pleasure boaters on channel 13 all crying to be let through, and it was getting pretty packed there in the lagoon as well, crammed with boats in every little space. He made the executive decision to let us through and then he announced that the powers that be wouldn't let us through, then they relented and only then did he allow us through.<br />
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Out into the inner Harbor and Gary raised the mast and assembled the boom and we raised the sails. We made our way to Spectacle Island in the Inner Harbor where we took a mooring in order to be able to better assess the situation with the centerboard. Water temperatures in the harbor being a relatively balmy 67°, Gary donned a snorkel and mask and jumped in, diving under the boat to retrieve the floatie. As it was a hot day, I jumped in as well and we pulled partial eclipse ashore and took a shower at the outdoor shower station by the beach. Feeling much refreshed, we rode back to eclipse and set sail for Marshfield. <br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div dir="ltr">
The winds and the tides conspired against us as we tried to make our exit from Boston Harbor and so we found ourselves motor sailing most of the way out until we begin to round nantasket at which point the winds picked up and the tidal currents slacked off. </div>

Barely enough wind to sail off the anchor out of the bay on Peddock Island, and once we we're into the channel the tide caught us and negated any further attempt for wind power. So we motored to Spectacle Island, which is now a high hill (spoils from the Big Dig) and city park. They have water here and free dockage, so we tie up, fill our bladder tank, and take down the mast.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Newly configured as a motorboat, we continue up the harbor, through the lock and into the Charles River. But along the way, Old Ironsides/USS Constitution is being towed out for her annual turn-around cruise. We meet her (and throngs of other boats of every description) just as the tugs are turning her, adjacent to the fort. She fired several of her cannon, and the fort fired back. We could smell the cordite.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Up the Charles with many other boats, we continued past the Basin and up to Watertown, where Kristen borrows a car for a little shopping, before we return downriver for the Fourth of July festivities.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
There must be a thousand kayaks/canoes/inflatables here. We anchor just upstream of the Mass Ave bridge. On the other side of the bridge, 'the Basin', it.s packed with power boats that got there early for prime spots. We're happier here with more space between boats.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The Boston Pops is simulcast on the radio, and they've packed in as many commercials as they can. There's a barge in the river where the fireworks will launch from; plus from the bridge, closed of course. The sun sets, the music plays, and we all ooh and aah at the pyrotechnic display. They really do a good job here, with well-coordinated displays of sight and sound.</div>

The wind picked up shortly after breakfast and we made our way south through the Beverly islands headed out past Marblehead neck lighthouse into Massachusetts Bay.The winds held fair out of the southeast today at about 10 knots and we made good time close-hauled all the way from Marblehead to Boston harbor on a single tack. Surprisingly, they were few boats in the bay and as we approach the harbor the primary activity was that of dredging barges and crane, as they scooped their mud and seawater from the channel.<br />
<br />
Entering the harbor, we made our way to peddocks Island which was, for a time, an island the Portuguese fisherman who where displaced from their homes in the city of Boston as the city developed. it was also the site at the turn of the last century of a summer hotel and in later years during the 1917 and 1940s served as a fort during World War I and II as well as an outpost to guard against German subs potentially entering the harbor.<br />
<br />
We strolled the island and found it to be a gym, with wooded hills and craigie bluffs and a goodly population of deer as well. one of the old military buildings have been turned into an information and welcome center. Camping is allowed on the island and one may select from a campsite or a well-furnished yurt complete with electric roof fan.<br />
<br />
after our ramble about the island we returned, rowing partial eclipse back to our Anchorage just offshore of the beach. Dinner was chicken breast stuffed with bacon and cheese and a vegetable medley which included some freshly picked milkweed from the island. Delicious!<br />
<br />
After the sunset, the sky was aglow with fireworks both private and Town sponsored from all around the harbor. For miles around, we could see the bursting flares and colorful displays from our vantage onboard eclipse. A wonderful end to a beautiful, nearly one tack, sailing dayKristenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05079072666679905116noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2571381857036683633.post-58490665052372414212019-07-02T18:49:00.002-04:002019-07-05T06:40:15.009-04:00Day 5, July 2, Misery Island and Canada Day.<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
The sunshine is beautiful as it rises out of the Atlantic and bathes the town of Rockport. But we must take our leave and 'round Cape Ann between Thatchers Island and Milk Island, then past Gloucester and more islands.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Along the way we spy another harbor seal, lots of huge mansions with empty windows looking out over the seas, and men in boats collecting lobsters. (could be some women too).</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Misery Island is our destination, where we visited two years ago. This was once a health retreat, with buildings and staff and all. Now it's public, with several nice coves to anchor in depending on wind direction. There are public moorings too, and we join a dozen other boats (mostly power) to enjoy the warm afternoon. After relaxing on board a while, we row to shore and hike the perimeter of the island. Despite the ubiquitous and omnipresent poison ivy, it's a lovely island with vistas in every direction.<br />

We're up with the glow of morning but no sun yet. Drop the mooring and start motoring with a strong falling tide to the ocean. There are two low bridges to pass, but the lift masters don't start work until 7am, so we drop the mast, pass under, and put it up again. The MacGregor sailboat is renown for easy rigging/de-rigging for this size boat.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
We're finally out on the ocean! And with a favorable wind we turn south past Rye and Hampton. Then the wind stops (typical late morning doldrums) but when they return we've got a headwind! Arrggghh. But it's steady and strong and pleasant sailing. Along the way we see two harbor seals (one was really big!) and a minke whale!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
A few weeks ago we made a solar oven (similar to a GoSun) and mounted it on the aft rail. For lunch we cooked sausages under the sun. We'll do more of this!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
We had thought to transit the Anisquam River, but the wind was more favorable to go out around Cape Ann, so we picked Rockport for our anchorage. After dinner we strolled around the very touristy town as the shops were closing.<br />

Day 3, June 30, Durham</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Nothing to be done.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I am beginning to come around to that opinion in my life, I told Gary.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
They said....</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
If we wait, the good weather will come.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Perhaps today.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Perhaps tomorrow.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Perhaps the next day.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Ah yes.... nothing to be done.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
But perhaps I should not be channeling from “Waiting for Godot”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Perhaps our chance is yet to come on Monday.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
And yes, we spent the day in Durham.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Waiting....</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Waiting....</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Waiting for the weather to turn</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<img height="368" src="blob:https://www.blogger.com/6f1a959d-0950-40df-98f2-4c51c0e629a8" width="640" /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
In the meantime, we got our new anchor/chain/rope set up with new shackles that'll roll over the bow roller better, plus improvements to the solar oven. A quick trip to the supermarket for some fresh produce and a bicycle ride for me, Kristen, to the house to take a shower and prepare a proper cup of coffee! While at the house, I noticed woodchips trailing off from a yard and into the street, away from where a section of tree had been. Strong winds last night were, perhaps, a bit stronger than we had thought!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Then Mark joined us again for a dinner of Gary's famous fish chowder at low tide.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
(We are not exactly sure if Gary's famous fish chowder at high tide is ever available),</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
But if only the tide would rise so we could make haste to an anchorage in the bay, closer to the ocean, to be at the ready for the dawn and our planned escape to sea and SOUTH!</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

Day 2, June 29. Piscataqua</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Saturday was a dismal and threatening forecast, but turned out to be just a hot, humid day with no wind. Mark joined us for lunch at Goat Island, then for burgers at Great Bay Marina for dinner. Big thunderheads could be seen around us, but none hit.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Until about midnight, that is! We were securely tied to a mooring behind Hen Island, Newington, and in the middle of the night a brief but vigorous t-storm went right over us. Lots of wind and heavy rain with flashes every half minute and nearly constant thunder. Exciting for half an hour.</div>
