Day 53, 7.19.18, Sand Lake

I expect a crepuscular nature for mosquitoes, but last night they kept buzzing just outside of the mozzy net until nearly dawn. Pesky buggers.
Parks Canada mascot welcomes you to the Rideau Canal

Thursday brings another day of fair weather, with pleasant temperatures. We continue up the Rideau, which involves another flight of four locks in a row, and the locks are full with seven boats. There's also a visitors center (with bathrooms) to explore and blacksmith's shop (closed).

Typical Rideau
As we entered Whitefish Lake, we spied a prominent cliff on the shore. We dropped anchor in a nearby bay and accepted the opportunity for a bushwhacking hike. After a short but steep climb through acadian forest, we were rewarded with a vista across the lake and beyond.

This was once a river connecting lakes, and it shows. Some sections are narrow and twisty, while others are wide and open. Where it's shallow there is much weed growth, which can tangle with the propeller.

Another night anchored in a quiet bay, this one in Sand Lake. We've selected a spot with more exposure and more wind, so we shouldn't get too many mosquitoes.

Days 36-38, August 4-6. Homeward bound

Exiting the New River near low is rather exciting. The whole estuary funnels through a narrow channel and can reach high speeds with rapids...
