Day 74, 8.9.18 - Lots of locks, the Chambly Canal

Another fort looms on the shore here. Fort Chambly was originally a French outpost, was captured briefly by the revolutionaries from the south (a few years before they could be called 'Americans') then turned over to the British after their Seven Years War with the French, when all of New France was deeded to Great Britain. Eventually it became part of the new confederation called Canada, fell into disarray, and when Parks Canada took it over, it was rebuilt as what we toured today.

This first lock is a flight of three together, followed by three more spaced apart. The whole of the Chambly Canal consists of ten locks, and we tie up for the night just above the final. The canal is perhaps the narrowest we've transited, with homes all along the shores. The town hosts free wifi, which sometimes reaches Eclipse.

Days 36-38, August 4-6. Homeward bound

Exiting the New River near low is rather exciting. The whole estuary funnels through a narrow channel and can reach high speeds with rapids...
