2019 Adventure, Day 3, Durham

Day 3, June 30, Durham

Nothing to be done.
I am beginning to come around to that opinion in my life, I told Gary.
They said....
If we wait, the good weather will come.
Perhaps today.
Perhaps tomorrow.
Perhaps the next day.
Ah yes.... nothing to be done.
But perhaps I should not be channeling from “Waiting for Godot”
Perhaps our chance is yet to come on Monday.
And yes, we spent the day in Durham.

Waiting....

Waiting....

Waiting for the weather to turn

In the meantime, we got our new anchor/chain/rope set up with new shackles that'll roll over the bow roller better, plus improvements to the solar oven. A quick trip to the supermarket for some fresh produce and a bicycle ride for me, Kristen, to the house to take a shower and prepare a proper cup of coffee! While at the house, I noticed woodchips trailing off from a yard and into the street, away from where a section of tree had been. Strong winds last night were, perhaps, a bit stronger than we had thought!

Then Mark joined us again for a dinner of Gary's famous fish chowder at low tide.

(We are not exactly sure if Gary's famous fish chowder at high tide is ever available),

But if only the tide would rise so we could make haste to an anchorage in the bay, closer to the ocean, to be at the ready for the dawn and our planned escape to sea and SOUTH!

2019: Cape Cod Adventure, Day 2

Day 2, June 29. Piscataqua

Saturday was a dismal and threatening forecast, but turned out to be just a hot, humid day with no wind. Mark joined us for lunch at Goat Island, then for burgers at Great Bay Marina for dinner. Big thunderheads could be seen around us, but none hit.

Until about midnight, that is! We were securely tied to a mooring behind Hen Island, Newington, and in the middle of the night a brief but vigorous t-storm went right over us. Lots of wind and heavy rain with flashes every half minute and nearly constant thunder. Exciting for half an hour.

2019: Cape Cod Adventure, Day 1

Day 1, June 28. Piscataqua

It's a new summer, time for a new adventure. Last year we missed sailing from home (Durham, NH) to Narraganset Bay RI due to late spring weather, and coming back, hurricanes were churning up the coast, so we trailered home. This year's adventure will be to complete the journey and then some. We're off to a slow start.

The weather gods can be fickle. Eclipse has been prepped and ready, but winds have been from the East which brings fog, or southwest, which is on our nose. Instead we drove up into the White Mountains and did a two night backpacking trip.

But finally, Friday looked good. So we launched Thursday evening, tied up to the dock there for the night, and watched the forecast deteriorate. Friday morning brought thick fog, so we didn't bother getting going until late morning, motored out to the mouth of the Oyster River, and tried to sail with no wind, which didn't work well at all.

Instead we dropped anchor in a cove for lunch, reading and napping until the tides changed. Finally a bit of wind picked up, so we sailed down to Great Bay, and returned to the cove for the night as the wind died again.

The forecast for the next two days is for thunderstorms, so we'll not likely to be going anywhere soon.

Days 36-38, August 4-6. Homeward bound

Exiting the New River near low is rather exciting. The whole estuary funnels through a narrow channel and can reach high speeds with rapids...
