Day 79, 8.14.18: Burlington to Charlotte, VT

Wind!
We spend the morning provisioning for the next few days, then cast off. The wind is light and against us, but we tack slowly into it. Thunderstorms are popping up beyond the lake, and they soon begin to draw air into themselves. The wind increases. Soon we're happily sailing at about 5 knots. When whitecaps form we shorten the mainsail by tying in the first reef. As the wind continues to build and thunderstorms build, we also reef the jib. Other sailboats heading south seem to keep their full sails. But Eclipse sails better in strong winds with reduced canvas.

As the afternoon wears, the winds drop, Eclipse goes back to full sails. Just south of Essex NY we find a well protected harbor on the Vermont side. At least eight cruising sailboats are also here for the night. Fabulous sunset over the Adirondacks. I could get used to this.
Dunder Rock...a very formidable looking island out in Lake Champlain

Days 36-38, August 4-6. Homeward bound

Exiting the New River near low is rather exciting. The whole estuary funnels through a narrow channel and can reach high speeds with rapids...
