Day 10, July 7, Cape Cod Canal

Yesterday's west wind shifted to the north during the thunderstorm, then to the east by morning at 20mph. Too strong to get out of this narrow and twisty harbor. So we do laundry instead. Around noon the wind abates, plus the inflowing tidal current has slacked, so we're off again although a late start.

Nice sailing off of Plymouth harbor for a few hours, but we've got to be at the entrance to the Cape Cod Canal before 7pm or the tidal current will be against us and we'd have to wait till morning. So we motor-sail. Not our favorite thing to do, but required in this case.

Along the way I bake potatoes in our solar oven for potato salad.

The canal is wide and fast at 2-4 knots plus our own speed. Fishermen and cyclists populate the shore. There's a little wind here and we try to sail, but it's barely enough to maintain steerage-way. Just beyond the end of the canal we find a nice spot to anchor near Onset Mass. As dusk falls we are treated to yet another fireworks show.

Days 36-38, August 4-6. Homeward bound

Exiting the New River near low is rather exciting. The whole estuary funnels through a narrow channel and can reach high speeds with rapids...
