Day 5, July 2, Misery Island and Canada Day.

The sunshine is beautiful as it rises out of the Atlantic and bathes the town of Rockport. But we must take our leave and 'round Cape Ann between Thatchers Island and Milk Island, then past Gloucester and more islands.

Along the way we spy another harbor seal, lots of huge mansions with empty windows looking out over the seas, and men in boats collecting lobsters. (could be some women too).

Misery Island is our destination, where we visited two years ago. This was once a health retreat, with buildings and staff and all. Now it's public, with several nice coves to anchor in depending on wind direction. There are public moorings too, and we join a dozen other boats (mostly power) to enjoy the warm afternoon. After relaxing on board a while, we row to shore and hike the perimeter of the island. Despite the ubiquitous and omnipresent poison ivy, it's a lovely island with vistas in every direction.
Fire in the sky
Reflections of a day well spent
Become memories

Cove on Misery Headlands break the ocean swells Pleasure boats gather

Great spreading oak tree Sits Kristen for a photo Easy climb branches

Sailboat neatly framed window of abandoned stone Poison ivy grows

Dappled waters.  Sail
With the wind. In harmony
One with Earth and sea.

Traps tossed on the beach Mangled and broken and tornOur modern flotsam

Days 36-38, August 4-6. Homeward bound

Exiting the New River near low is rather exciting. The whole estuary funnels through a narrow channel and can reach high speeds with rapids...
